Landmark Trials

The introduction of UPLIFT® (Understanding Potential Long-term Impacts on Function with Tiotropium) reflects a key milestone for the brand. A landmark, 4-year global trial in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), UPLIFT® is evaluating the potential of tiotropium to slow disease progression by reducing the rate of decline in lung function.

UPLIFT® Overview

Duration: 4 years
Results expected: 2nd half 2008
Clinical outcome: Reduction in rate of decline in lung function in COPD patients?
PLUS usual care: All respiratory medication except inhaled anticholinergics
Lead investigator: Professor Marc Decramer

Sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim and Pfizer Inc., UPLIFT® is assessing the long-term effects of tiotropium on lung-function decline, health-related quality of life, exacerbations and associated hospitalisations and mortality (respiratory and all-cause). A post-hoc analysis of data from two 1-year studies showed that patients had a rate of decline in lung function parameter through FEV1 of 12 ml/year compared with 58 ml/year for placebo, thus positively supporting the scientific rationale underlying UPLIFT®.
