Health and safety

For Boehringer Ingelheim, the health and safety of our employees has high priority. Tools for comprehensive analysis of workplaces improve the identification of risks at an early stage. Programmes are established to protect our employees.

This is true for our workers in the manufacturing plants as well as for our office workers, our field force and for contractors that work at our sites.

The local programmes are checked during regularly processed corporate EHS audits.

Some examples of our current focus in the field of health and safety:

Handling highly potent compounds safely

Internal company exposure limits for highly potent active ingredients make an important contribution towards protecting the health of our employees. All sites determine their specific risks in respect to employee exposure and then define appropriate protective measures based on the risk analysis.

To help guide personnel, a technical standard for solids processing was prepared for pharmaceutical production. In an innovative approach, this standard integrates multiple EHS aspects with GMP requirements to ensure protection of both people and product. Closed systems allowing highly potent compounds to be handled without respirators have already been installed at numerous locations.

Safety in the field

Safety at work is not just a matter of concern for production. Since 2004, all units are explicitly asked to implement a programme for safety of the field sales force. Obligatory elements are: ·

  • Policy on field force safety
  • Awareness-building
  • Standard-setting
  • Training
  • Accident investigation and reporting
  • Target-setting
In 2008, we are wirking on a worldwide policy that reinforces and supplements the existing requirements.

Contractors

Boehringer Ingelheim expects from the contractors that work at our sites to fulfil a high standard regarding EHS issues. To ensure this standard, a corporate procedure on contractor safety describes minimum requirements…more
