Summary Report 2002
Animal Health
For our Animal Health business 2002 was a very difficult year.
Net sales amounted to EUR 318 million (2001: EUR 316 million). Very
favourable developments in Europe were more than offset by difficult
market conditions in the Americas and restructuring needs. Overall
growth was flat in euro terms and plus 3% adjusted for currency
effects. This growth is in line with worldwide market trends.
In Europe we demonstrated the growth potential of our portfolio by
posting 17% growth, mainly driven by the further strengthening of
our swine and pet positions. Another positive effect resulted from
the inauguration of our joint venture in Japan with Shionogi in
April 2002.
The year 2002 was a very successful one for our swine division. Our
products Ingelvac ® PRRS and Ingelvac
® M.HYO have already secured us the
leading position in the respiratory sector, which was further
strengthened by a highly successful European launch of Ingelvac
® M.HYO.
We are now following a similar leadership path in the enteric
segment with our Enterisol ® Ileitis
vaccine, the first oral vaccine against Lawsonia intracellularis
which provides optimal performance with less antibiotics. Enterisol
® Ileitis, already launched in the USA to
selected customers in 2001, was in 2002 offered to a broader
customer base and launched in Canada.
In the cattle segment, based on a high market penetration with our
still growing classical mastitis product range, we successfully
developed Metacam ® for cattle in Europe
too. Our modern and highly effective non-steroidal anti-inflammatory
agent is available for the treatment of pain and inflammation and
showed 46% growth.
Marketing authorization for Mamyzin ® in
France and the United Kingdom will help to further strengthen our
position in this segment.
In the North America Free Trade Agreement region, we extended our
range of vaccines for respiratory diseases in cattle and now cover
the full spectrum of relevant pathogens.
In the small animals segment, the positive development of Metacam
® and Vetmedin ® in
Europe underlines our position in the treatment of chronic diseases
in dogs and cats. Metacam ® has been
approved in Europe for use in cats, offering veterinarians a
specific product for the treatment of pain and inflammation in this
species. Metacam ® is expected to be
introduced for dogs next year in the USA and Japan. In the horse
segment, Torpex ® supplemented our range
of respiratory products with an innovative application concept in
the USA.
In Europe, the classical products in this indication continued to
grow, supported by the launch of Insol ® D,
a novel vaccine for fungal infections in horses and small animals.
It received approval mid-2002 in several European countries.
Our research activities at the new research center in St. Joseph,
Missouri, USA, were restructured in an international effort to
enable research results to be used more quickly, contributing to a
steady supply of innovative products. By investing around 10% of our
sales in research and development we are well prepared to maintain
our position as one of the leading research-based veterinary
companies.
