Process Science and large Scale Production

At the Boehringer Ingelheim facility in Biberach, Germany, we develop and manufacture recombinant DNA-derived proteins and monoclonal antibodies in mammalian cell culture. About 1,550 skilled employees within the biopharmaceutical business ensure a smooth process flow.

Economical process development

Economical process development

The pilot plant has a scale-up capacity of up to 2,000 litres fermentation volume and is used for process development and for manufacturing of pre-clinical and clinical material. All relevant disciplines for the establishment of a process are integrated in our process science department, facilitating technical transfer and making it as economical as possible. With our business process excellence program we assure constant improvements in all aspects of biomanufacturing.

Commercial supply

To supply the global market, biopharmaceuticals are produced in compliance with cGMP guidelines at our large scale production plant. Fermentation technology and geometry of the bioreactors are kept identical in the pilot plant and the commercial multi-product manufacturing plant, thus ensuring consistency in our product quality.

Capacity

  • Twelve multi-product fermentation train
  • Scale-up capacity from 80 to 15,000 litres per fermentation train
  • Total volume amounts up to 180,000 litres
  • Downstream processing matched to the scale of fermentation
  • Plant operated by a validated process control system
