"Responsible Care® is the chemical industry’s global voluntary initiative under which companies, through their national associations, work together to continuously improve their health, safety and environmental performance, and to communicate with stakeholders about their products and processes. The Responsible Care® ethic helps our industry to operate safely, profitably and with due care for future generations, and was commended by United Nations Environment Programme as making a significant contribution to sustainable development at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2002."

| Local Responsible Care Programme |
| |
With our declared support for the concepts of the Responsible Care® Initiative of the chemical industry, we have undertaken to exceed the minimum legal requirements wherever we consider it appropriate. All Boehringer Ingelheim production sites are required to identify their potential areas for EHS improvement and to seek to achieve self-imposed targets in Responsible Care programmes. The quality and the results of the programmes are examined regularly by Corporate headquarters. |

| Economic impact |
| |
Frequently it is not only our employees and the environment that benefit, but measures taken can also have an economic impact, as illustrated by the example of our wood-fired power station in Ingelheim, Germany.
Other examples show that we accept responsibility for our products and attach great value to EHS, not only at our own plants but also at those of our business partners. |
