| Focus on energy efficiency
|
|
|
| |
In 2007, a Boehringer Ingelheim global team set itself the goal of systematically identifying and communicating examples of best practice in energy efficiency within the company. Energy efficiency is also to be given even higher priority during the evaluation of new investments. Another initiative is the development of specific energy efficiency indicators designed to simplify performance evaluation and the setting of quantifiable targets. |

| Reduction of CO2 emissions |
| |
Amid growing concern about global warming, measures to reduce CO2 emissions are a major issue. By using energy efficiently we contribute further towards reducing CO2 emissions. As an example, our new packaging centre in Ingelheim, completed in 2007, employs highly efficient ventilation technology to keep energy requirements and finally CO2 emissions to a minimum. |
|
| Highly potent substances |
| |
Highly potent substances that represent a boon to patients at low doses, can pose a health risk to employees in production or development when inhaled as dust. We therefore set exposure limits for all our substances in order to ensure that none of our employees are exposed to excessive concentrations. During the past year technological solutions implemented e.g. at our sites in Biberach, Ridgefield and Kawanishi were designed to ensure that new, and often highly potent, active ingredients with very low exposure limits, can be handled safely without the need for respiratory protection equipment. |

Ingelheim, Germany: Wood fired power plant |
| |
Over the past three years, since the company switched the combined heat and power plant at its site in Ingelheim, Germany, to waste wood combustion, this major site has been CO2 neutral and our global CO2 balance sheet has improved by about 25%. Campaigns like the “CO2 and you” venture at the Ridgefield site in the USA have also helped raise the general awareness of the issue. |
|
| Environmental risk assessments |
| |
Product responsibility requires the implementation of environmental risk assessments for all newly launched drugs. Going beyond the official requirements for the authorisation of medicines, we voluntarily conduct studies on environmental fate and effects for more and more major products to gain a better appreciation of their potential environmental effects. |
|
| REACH |
| |
Product responsibility in the wider sense also includes the implementation of the REACH (Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals) Regulation, a cornerstone of the future EU chemicals policy. In 2007, we intensified our efforts a Boehringer Ingelheim to implement the requirements. The objective of the Regulation is to enhance the safety of all those involved along the product chain and to protect both consumers and the environment. In future, companies will only be permitted to use or market correspondingly registered products. |
