Crèches / day nurseries in Ingelheim and Biberach

day nursery in IngelheimBoehringer Ingelheim established two crèches (day nurseries) in Ingelheim and Biberach in co-operation with the City of Ingelheim and the "Hospital zum Heiligen Geist" in Biberach which are also opened for infants of Boehringer Ingelheim employees.

Boehringer Ingelheim is also offering
  • a programme for the supervision of children during the school holidays and
  • an "emergency nursery" with external partners in order to allow for the short-term care and supervision needs of children in the case of an exceptional situation or an emergency.

Great place to work

On employment, Boehringer Ingelheim has received numerous accolades. In 2007, Boehringer Ingelheim also succeeded for the six year in a row, in coming first in the VAA most preferred employer survey of executives in the German chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Read more

Employee volunteering

"Soziale Verantwortung Leben"The works safety team at Boehringer Ingelheim's Biberach site in southern Germany came No. 2 in the 2007 Baden-Württemberg Social Living (Soziales Leben) competition out of 1,200 nominations. The employees used their free time to help the physically or mentally disabled with moving house, home decoration, social occasions and outings. This takes place in cooperation with the Heggbacher Einrichtungen, a highly-regarded local care facility.

Internationale Tage

For almost five decades, the Internationale Tage in Ingelheim have offered art enthusiasts a special insight into different world cultures. It all started with the idea of giving people a chance to get to know the life and culture of other nations and people in international company settings. The central theme of cultural openness and continuing education prompted Dr. Ernst Boehringer, co-owner of the family-owned Boehringer Ingelheim to stage an annual cultural festival. The theme of the exhibition in 2008 is: Miró - The Alchemist.

For more information on the Internationale Tage, read our interview with Dr. Patricia Rochard. She has been managing the Internationale Tage since 1988 and has worked for the programme since 1975.

Projects for the aid of children in distress

Thomapyrin® Art Edition on 'Pain'For some years, Boehringer Ingelheim has been supporting various projects for the aid of children in distress at home and abroad. An example: For the Thomapyrin® Art Edition on "Pain", we could win the services of internationally celebrated artists. Their signed graphics are sold as limited copies and the proceeds are donated to UNICEF aid projects. Children in distress in Rwanda and in Nepal have lastingly benefited from these activities, to which Boehringer Ingelheim has been committed since 1996.

Firing with waste wood in Ingelheim

Conversion of the Ingelheim power stationThe conversion of the Ingelheim power station from coal to the regenerative energy source waste wood resulted in an improved ecological balance - apart from other emissions. Firing with waste wood makes a considerable contribution to environmental and climate protection. Boehringer Ingelheim invested more than 10 million Euro into this conversion. As a result Boehringer Ingelheim has managed to improve its own CO2 balance by a quarter, since 2005.

Frequently it is not only our employees and the environment that benefit, but measures taken can also have an economic impact, as illustrated by the example of our wood-fired power station in Ingelheim, Germany. Other examples show that we accept responsibility for our products and attach great value to Environmental Protection, Health & Safety (EHS), not only at our own plants but also at those of our business partners.

Energy efficiency

In 2006 Boehringer Ingelheim opened the new pharmaceutical development building which optimises energy efficiency through heat recovery. Also, a new administration building is currently under construction. The building's energy needs will be met by an environment-friendly geothermal system.

Climate protection

In a move to reduce emissions of gases detrimental to the global climate, in accordance with the Kyoto Protocol, the European Union introduced the Emissions Trading Scheme for CO2 in 2005. Boehringer Ingelheim has joined this scheme. Our heating power station in Ingelheim was issued trading certificates on the basis of the emissions in 2000 – 2002. Following the switch to wood, a CO2-neutral power source, we can now trade any certificates that we no longer need. This project has allowed us to pursue both ecological and economic goals at the same time.

In Ingelheim, Germany, too, additional plants are to be connected to the existing incinerator. Our goal for 2008 is to reduce Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) emissions by at least 50 %.

Our goals

Our wastewater treatment plants are already performing on a very high level. To maintain and further improve this level and to adapt to increasing loads, we started a major investment in our Ingelheim wastewater treatment plant. An additional state-of-the art treatment step will make the process more effective, will increase nitrogen removal by improving the nitrification/denitrification process, and will also target the specific halogen-containing wastewater which can be difficult to treat when using only conventional technology.

Responsibility for our people in our environment

In 2006 technological solutions implemented at our site in Biberach, Germany were designed to ensure that new, and often highly potent, active ingredients with very low exposure limits, can be handled safely without the need for respiratory protection.

Boehringer Ingelheim in Germany initiated a large-scale campaing – "Boehringer Ingelheim geht sicher" (Boehringer Ingelheim walks safely) – that includes a physical training course.
