THE ANGELS MISSION
President-Elect European Stroke Organisation
Every 30 minutes a stroke patient who could have been saved, dies or is left permanently disabled, not just because of the stroke, but because he or she had been treated in the wrong hospital. In fact, less than a third of stroke patients are currently treated in dedicated stroke centres. This means thousands of patients fail to get the specialist care they urgently need.
We need to change this!
Our vision is for stroke patients to receive the same level of treatment wherever they live in Europe. In order to do so, we have to formally certify hospitals for stroke care, which will take us 10 years to do.
In the meantime, 500,000 individuals will have missed their birthdays. Thousands of kids that will never be able to listen to a bedtime story as only a grandparent can tell. Scores of families will spend their next Christmas without a loved one.
We believe there’s a better way. We can reduce this decade-long wait to a shorter 3 years therein alleviating this health issue.
But we need you!
We know from experience that we must focus on two things to achieve our vision. First, we need to increase the number of stroke ready hospitals so that more patients have access to the specialist care they need. Second, we need to optimise the quality of treatment in all existing stroke centres.
Ultimately, we want to build a community of at least 1,500 stroke centres and stroke ready hospitals … working every day to improve the quality of treatment for every stroke patient in Europe. We believe we can achieve this by May 2019.
But we cannot do it without the help of the European stroke community. You. We need you to become part of this mission.
So, if you work in an existing stroke centre and want recognition for the quality of your treatment, or if you want to make your hospital stroke ready, then please, register with the Angels Initiative so we can provide you with the support you need.
I want there to be no doubt about the effectiveness of this programme … it works.
Setting up a new stroke centre, or maintaining the high standards expected of a team of specialists is a complex task. Our committee of experts have created a set of tools designed to help you every step of the way, while a dedicated Angels task force will support you in implementing it. We can assist by helping to train your staff through the Angels Academy, by equipping your hospital with almost everything you need to treat an acute stroke – in one stroke box, providing membership to the Angels Community, a platform for more support, more ideas, more sharing and giving recognition through the Excellence Awards programme. Everything we do is designed to inspire and empower you and, most importantly, to give those patients a second chance at life.
Take a moment to think about what your world would look like if this goal were achieved. Three years from now, we will celebrate the number of hospitals that have joined. We will celebrate the lives we have saved. We will celebrate the fact that we managed to institutionalise new standards of care that will continue to save lives and improve patient outcomes into the future. This is your legacy. We will celebrate ourselves, because the patients whose lives we have saved cannot join us because their names can never be known. More mothers and fathers will attend graduations and weddings. More grandchildren will know their grandparents. Life is full of wonderful opportunities that ought to be experienced.
1500 registered hospitals by May 2019. Join the Angels initiative today, and make this your legacy.
