Boehringer Ingelheim is committed to contributing responsibly and to achieving important progress on the climate change and C02 targets in keeping with the landmark agreement struck at the United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP21, in Paris in December 2015.
The company achieved its own 2015 goals for CO2 emission reduction and energy saving and is well on track to reach its long-term targets. Since 2010, Boehringer Ingelheim has reduced energy-related CO2 emissions by 15.5% and aims to achieve a 20% reduction by 20201. Another important milestone has been the complete and successful implementation of ISO 50001 energy management system at all company sites in Germany.
Engineering excellence is also driving CO2 reduction at Boehringer Ingelheim. Energy conservation played an important part in the design of the new BI5 administrative building in Ingelheim, Germany, the company’s largest office project to date, providing a working environment for 1,200 people.
Innovative technology is employed to minimise the carbon footprint of the 18,000 square meter structure. Waste heat is collected from the neighbouring data centre to heat BI5 during the winter and cooling from the data centre is efficiently used to cool the BI5 building in summer. BI5 also uses comprehensive online weather forecast data to control its advanced building management system. Predicting the weather days in advance enables energy consumption and room climate conditions to be optimised.
Boehringer Ingelheim will continue to strive to contribute towards the ambitious targets set out at COP21 on curbing greenhouse gas emissions, strengthening resilience and pursuing common climate action to limit global warming to 1.5 centigrade.
