Sustainable Health for vulnerable communities

Boehringer Ingelheim is driven by a purpose to positively impact the lives of communities in India. To attain this, we are working with NGO partners to create sustainable future. Our aim is to impact the lives and health of people and engage our, through supporting vulnerable communities.

Community management:

In 2020, BI and CInI entered into partnership to implement a multi-thematic intensive program in 5 villages of Dhadgaon block, adjoining existing program cluster of CInI. The project focused on integrated effort on livelihood enhancement, improving nutrition and School WaSH to bring about a visible change in the quality of life of community and their access to basic services. As per project design, Livelihood action and community intuitions were the core and nutrition and Sanitation program was dovetailed (layered) with this for achieving optimum results.

From the the first year of the project, all 5 villages are covered under Village Institution’s frame with concept seeding, exposures and capacity building events. Village level awareness & campaigning for Livelihoods, WaSH and Nutrition has been simultaneously done through dissemination of IECs and other cluster’s community leaders. Newly elected VI leaders took charge along with field cadre for demand creation for the interventions and mobilization of obligatory community contribution wherever required.

Under Livelihood as of now 456 families are getting support under the agriculture productivity enhancement and out of this 193 families have also adopted vegetable cultivation. 25 families have been provided trellis units and 26.50 acres of drip and mulch units are installed for 53 families. Assured irrigation facility is the key enabler for agriculture and Dhadgaon being located in hilly terrain of the Satpuda ranges, it is difficult to get irrigation facility and for this construction of 17 new group wells in the low lands and 6 water lifting & distribution schemes (1 solar based) are implemented. In total 71 families got assured irrigation in 95 acres. Under livestock development, assured vet care services are being provided to 423 goat rearing families and induction of 29 Osmanabadi breeding buck is completed as a part of breed improvement.

Under WaSH in schools, 3 primary Zila Parishad Schools were covered for retrofitting of WaSH facilities and construction of hand washing stations. Parallelly, intensive BCC has been done with school administration, SMC and students for adopting hygienic practices.

Under CBNI, all 5 villages are covered and 7 Nutrition Champions (Jijamata Sevikas) are providing support to pregnant women, lactating mothers and children. Total 234 community events were conducted like Baby shower, complementary feeding, mother’s meeting and celebration of nutritional events. 897 home visits were conducted for mother’s, SAM and MAM. The community response and support from govt frontline workers is good.
