Innovation in Cardio-Renal-Metabolic Disease Research

Research into cardio-renal-metabolic diseases is at a turning point. However, there still remains an unmet need for people with these conditions. Globally, there are more than one billion diagnoses of cardio-renal-metabolic conditions – a group of interconnected disorders, including heart failure, chronic kidney disease and type 2 diabetes, that are a leading cause of death worldwide. In the U.S., these conditions account for up to 20 million deaths annually. With rising rates of obesity and an aging population in the U.S., the prevalence of these conditions is expected to rise. Against this challenging landscape, scientists at Boehringer Ingelheim are looking at things differently. By exploring disease mechanisms and common pathways within various cardio-renal-metabolic diseases, we aim to leverage synergies in our pursuit of identifying the next wave of innovative medicines.

The Big Picture: A Holistic Approach to CardioMetabolic Disease Research

Boehringer Ingelheim’s cardio-renal-metabolic research strategy takes a holistic view of the broader therapeutic needs of patients who may often have multiple conditions, connected by underlying similar pathologies. Our deep scientific expertise and long history of innovation across the cardio-renal-metabolic spectrum give us a unique perspective in addressing these challenges. Mohamed Eid, vice president, Clinical Development & Medical Affairs, Cardio-Renal-Metabolism & Respiratory Medicine, provides further perspective.

“Boehringer Ingelheim is committed to advancing awareness and treatment for cardio-renal-metabolic conditions – a group of growing health conditions with significant unmet needs. To do this, we leverage our scientific expertise that encompasses a broad range of cardio-renal-metabolic conditions and the insights and knowledge of our care partner and patient community in order to help improve clinical outcomes and the lives of people living with these diseases. Together, our mission is to drive a more holistic approach to patient care to address the multi-system risk associated with cardio-renal-metabolic conditions and evolve treatment for millions of people across the globe.”

Our patient-centric approach goes further – beyond classical molecular biology to encompass the latest thinking in digital and behavioral sciences. We actively support diverse awareness programs for both healthcare professionals and patients to increase understanding of the interrelated C-R-M conditions and ways to help improve health outcomes, especially among communities disproportionately impacted by these conditions. Advances in these approaches, which complement other aspects of disease management, mean that we aspire to support patients more effectively in their fight to achieve sustainable lifestyle change in the future.
